Analysis made easy

Analysis made easy

The software automatically detects bat calls and displays them clearly. Customizable spectrogram and waveform visualizations with zoom and measuring aids facilitate the evaluation. Computer-assisted species identification using the integrated bat species library (European and UK species).

Get the most out of your recordings

Listen to the recordings, also time-stretched or superimposed and thus in the audible range. Thanks to the BATLOGGER’s GPS you can see on a map where the recordings were made. All BATLOGGER metadata (temperature, triggers, …) is displayed.

After the analysis, your data can easily be further processed. Export the results for example into your GIS or create your own statistics with a spreadsheet tool.

Automate recurring tasks

Automate recurring tasks

To speed up the analysis, various actions can be applied to recordings that meet certain criteria. For example, mark (or delete) all recordings with poor quality, add notes to certain recordings or even automatically assign species. You can add/remove/edit/reorder tasks as you wish.

Editions

The software is available in multiple editions. The table below shows the features available in each edition.

Manage BATLOGGER recordings quickly and easily in projects

BatExplorer projects

Projects help you organize your recordings, edit multiple recordings at once, create useful statistics, and much more.

Automatically find and measure bat calls

Bat calls

Bat search calls are automatically detected, marked and analyzed. Various call parameters, e.g. peak frequency or call shape, are determined and allow a determination of the species.
Bat species suggestions

Auto-ID

The software calculates species and genus proposals according to the selected species library and the averaged call parameters of a recording.

Listening, evaluating and classifying recordings

Analyse recordings

Various tools allow a detailed analysis of the ultrasound recordings:
  • Assign a species to the recording (classify)
  • Measure call parameters
  • Call parameter statistics
  • Filter species by call characteristics
  • Listen to recordings in different modes
  • Listen to recordings in different modes

Integrated bat species library

Bat species libraries

The application contains several bat species libraries. A library contains a list of species that can be assigned to recordings. Supplied libraries:
  • European bats with German names (European bats DE)
  • European bats with English names (European bats EN)
  • Bats in Great Britain (UK bats EN)
Integrated bat species library
Filter and sort recordings

Filter

Extensive filters can be set to find specific recordings or group them according to specific characteristics. The search criteria can be saved for later reuse.
Filter and sort recordings
Spectrogram and waveform visualizations

Recording views

The recorded raw data (WAV data) can be displayed in different ways. Each method has its own strength when it comes to parameter measurements and species classification. The most important view for the bat call analysis is the spectrogram view. In addition, the data is also displayed as a waveform or spectrum. The data can be measured and visualized with a variety of tools. For example, the bat calls can be highlighted or the call intervals can be displayed.
Spectrogram and waveform visualizations
Diagrams and statistics

Statistics

Bat activities, frequencies and species are displayed as clear diagrams. Export as image file.
Map view with recording locations and GPX routes

Map view

Displays the recording locations on the map. If a GPX track has been recorded, it will also be displayed. In addition, further track files can be imported. The recordings can optionally be displayed as a heatmap.
Map view with recording locations and GPX routes
Data export (CSV, GPX, KML, PNG, WAV)

Export

The recordings and the associated metadata such as species, calls, temperature, notes and many others can be exported for further processing.
Display recording metadata (trigger parameters, temperature, …)

Metadata

Display of all metadata recorded together with the recording. E.g. location coordinates, temperature, time, trigger parameters, device serial number,…
Display recording metadata (trigger parameters, temperature, ...)
Light/dark theme

GUI-Theme

The user interface can be displayed with a bright or dark theme.

Customize species color indicators

Customize colors

Adjust the color markings according to your preferences. The colour markings are used to better distinguish the different species and are also used in statistics and maps.
Customize species color indicators
Customize guide colors

Frequency guides

Create custom colored guides at specific frequencies for visual discrimination in the spectrogram.
Edit tasks and create new tasks

Automation with Tasks

To speed up the analysis, recurring tasks can be automated. For example, mark (or delete) poor quality recordings, add notes to specific recordings or even automatically assign species. You can add/remove/edit/reorder tasks as you wish.
  • Assign a specific species
  • Assign species or genus proposal
  • Create notes
  • Split recordings with multiple species
  • Rate recordings
  • Mark recordings
  • Delete recordings
Edit tasks and create new tasks
Create/import project templates/settings

Project templates

Project templates allow you to manage different settings for different scenarios. For example, if your work consists of monitoring wind turbines and capturing for transects, it may be helpful to have two different templates, one for each domain. The one for wind turbines has more restrictions on call detection, while the one for transects, for example, may have a less restrictive filter for “Find bad recordings”. Import project settings from existing projects.
Create/import species libraries

Custom species libraries

Create your own species libraries and use them in your projects. You can exchange your own species libraries with like-minded people.
Create/import species libraries
Extended export functions

Export data for your reports

Highly configurable export options for statistical data to further process it in other applications. Easily create year activity diagrams with daylight times or aggregate data according to your needs. E.g. calls per minute or recordings grouped by species etc.
Extended export functions
Import different recording formats into projects (RAW, FLAC, WAV, time-stretched, real-time, multichannel)

Supported recording formats

Recordings from various devices can be processed. If necessary, the files are converted. GUANO-Metadata is supported.
Import different recording formats into projects (RAW, FLAC, WAV, time-stretched, real-time, multichannel)
Import structured CSV data and assign it to the recordings

Import additional data

Structured data (CSV) can be read in and assigned to the recordings. Due to the intelligent assignment possibilities, data from other sources can also be processed.
Import log files into the project and display them

BATREC.LOG

For a complete monitoring it is important to have data about the device status even in times with no recordings. The BATLOGGER devices store a log file which records continuously. This data is automatically transferred into the project and saved so that the complete recording phase can be reconstructed at any time.
Import log files into the project and display them
Complement (missing) recording locations automatically from GPX data

Add recording locations from a GPX track file

Recording locations can be assigned from a GPX track file, e.g. if recordings were made with devices without GPS. It is even possible to interpolate missing places with this function, even if no GPX file was recorded at all. The data is merged using the time stamps of the trackpoints and the recording time stamps.
